The main and most important electrolyte lost in sweat is sodium (Na+).
Sodium imbalances can occur due to excessive loss of electrolytes through sweat, and a haphazard training / racing fueling plan.
The electrolyte concentration of sweat can vary greatly from person to person. The sodium concentration of one liter of sweat can range from 300 mg to 3600 mg depending on the individual, and varies by diet, sweating rate, hydration, and degree of heat acclimation (39). Under-replacing your sodium losses can lead to various problems including dehydration, muscular cramping, headaches, gastrointestinal upset, nausea, fluid retention and hyponatremia.
You lose sodium in different concentrations from various areas of the body. By taking sweat samples from the 3 key body areas as indicated in our instruction kit we can determine your overall body sodium loss per litre of sweat. You simply mail the samples back to our laboratory, where a mass spectrometer is used to determine the sodium concentration.
